Storm guard Temeka Johnson, former Gonzaga star Courtney Vandersloot giving back

#MeekFAWWNBA players are known for their giving nature, most starting foundations despite seemingly not earning enough to give as they do. Storm PG Temeka Johnson is the latest to dote on the public in a rare move. She already has the H.O.P.E foundation that works to inspire communities, this week Johnson is using social media to show fans her appreciation.

A nine-year WNBA veteran who won a championship with Phoenix, Johnson will host her own “Fan Appreciation Week” beginning Monday through Friday, using different social media platforms, to give her the opportunity to give back to her fans that have supported her throughout her career. According to her agent, “it’s a simple gesture which goes a long way in maintaining and building her popularity and releasing her new and improved website TemekaJohnson.com.”

Beginning at 6pm (PT) on Monday, Johnson will hold art contests, live chats and giveaways. A schedule is below and fans are encouraged to use the Twitter hastag #MeekFAW to participate with Johnson.

“This past season had a lot of ups and downs but the one thing I could count on was all the support from you guys!” Johnson said of her following. “I have the most passionate, enthusiastic and creative fans ever and this week I want to take the time to thank you guys for everything you do for me!!”

Meanwhile, on Thursday former Gonzaga star Courtney Vandersloot is raising money for the Special Olympics via tickets sold when her Chicago Sky plays Seattle at KeyArena.  Tickets to the game and access to a postgame meet-and-greet are $25 of which $5 goes to the Special Olympics of Washington. Vandersloot is matching the amount made at the game. You can purchase tickets via TicketMaster.

Vandersloot, who’s fifth in the WNBA in averaged assists (5.0), said she picked the Special Olympics based on an experience she had her senior season at Gonzaga.

“I worked at one of the camps that was put on while I was at the Final Four,” Vandersloot said of the 2011 NCAA championship tournament in Indianapolis. “It was incredible. I had so much fun. These kids just have the best heart and they’re having so much fun and they feel so lucky to be involved in sports in general and I will never forget it. That camp, it’s just stuck with me.”

Lastly, former Storm C Nakia Sanford is returning to Seattle for a shoe drive to help Soels4Souls. Fans are encouraged to bring used or new shoes to Saturday’s Storm game against Indiana. There will be collection bins around KeyArena to gather the shoes.
