Seattle U set for regular-season finale at Connolly Center, WAC tournament

RedhawksSeattle U concludes its regular-season with two games this week. SU (13-14, 8-6 WAC) hosts Kansas City on Thursday and Chicago State on Saturday. The latter will mark Senior Day for forwards Kacie Sowell and Ashley Ward and G Sylvia Shephard. A ceremony will be held prior to the 4pm game at Connolly Center.

Sowell leads the Redhawks in scoring (15 points) and rebounding (9-3) this season. Shephard leads the team in assists (4.2) while Ward is the leader in minutes played (34). The trio, dubbed the SoCal Mafia, turned an 8-22 freshman season into a WAC regular-season championship as juniors. The seniors missed an opportunity at a NCAA tournament berth, however, losing in the WAC tournament championship game to rival Idaho.

Seattle U’s roster features 10 underclassmen this season, attributing to part of the struggles in repeating as conference champions. Idaho (20-8, 13-1) clinched the regular-season title in a home win against SU last week.

The Redhawks are 3-3 since losing 77-59 to the Vandals at home Feb. 1. The seniors’ last chance to win the conference’s sole bid to the NCAA tournament is through the WAC championship next week in Las Vegas. The WAC typically doesn’t earn at-large bids from the NCAA selection committee due to the league’s weak strength-of-schedule. A repeat postseason appearance in the Women’s NIT is more likely for Seattle U, should it not advance.

Games from the WAC tournament will be broadcasted via the web for a nominal fee. Here’s more information from the league office:
