Storm plans championship night; Russell Wilson a women’s soccer fan

Storm games are no different than funerals, nail salons and youth soccer games when it comes to spotting Seahawks Super Bowl championship gear. It’s become a fun game to see how long it takes to spot a shirt, jersey or hoodie wherever you are these days. So, obviously it’s good marketing to try to mix the Seahawks into a game promotion.

The Storm did that Wednesday in announcing it’s going to have a “Championship Night” where most of Seattle’s actual championship trophies will be on display. The Storm couldn’t get the Stanley Cup on loan, so the city’s lone hockey championship will only be honored during a planned celebratory video at halftime.

But the July 22 game vs. Phoenix at KeyArena will showcase the Seahawks Super Bowl XLVIII Lombardi Trophy, the 2004 and 2010 Storm WNBA trophies and the 1979 Sonics Larry O’Brien trophy. Won’t Diana Taurasi just love Seattle rolling out its hardware while she’s in town. Bet she drops 30 points on Seattle on the festive night.

The combined display of trophies is an interesting setup given the twist national media created when it disrespected the city’s pride in all of its championships by trying to compartmentalize winning. A pro title is a pro title no matter the gender or league.

A spokeswoman said the Storm is still trying to confirm who’ll be in attendance to represent the various teams. However one thing is certain, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is a bigger Seattle Reign fan than he is of the Storm despite his sister being a budding hoops star.

Anna Wilson recently won gold at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Czech Republic. Anna, who gave a verbal commitment to Stanford, averaged nine minutes in the tournament as a backup point guard.

When the Storm made its marketing announcement Wednesday, her big brother was at a Reign practice at Memorial Stadium. Russell posted a tweet about the Reign, which is undefeated through 16 matches.

The Reign posted a photo to its Twitter account of Wilson posing with coach/GM Laura Harvey:

Russell Wilson has attended two Reign matches this season, one in Portland, after first meeting the team on a flight back from the East Coast last spring. The Reign is in its second season, making a striking turnaround from last year’s 5-14-3 finish in the National Women’s Soccer League, which is also in its second season.

While plenty of his teammates have sat courtside to catch a WNBA game at KeyArena over the years, Wilson has never attended a Storm practice or game. Maybe July 22 will be the first game.

Here’s a look back at the Mariners’ celebration of the Super Bowl champions:
