Chris Gobrecht’s return part of UW’s nonconference schedule

HuskiesLogoWashington coach Mike Neighbors took to his Instagram account to announce the 2014-15 nonconference schedule. The second-year coach used Twitter to make his announcement last season, sitting in an airport to give comments about each opponent.

Below is the UW lineup in traditional form. One highlight is the return of legendary UW coach Chris Gobrecht. Now with Yale, Gobrecht is the winningest coach in Washington history. Her Bulldogs, featuring former Garfield High standout Nyasha Sarju, play the Huskies on Nov. 23.

Seattle U made its schedule announcement earlier this summer. The Redhawks host the Huskies in the annual city showdown on Dec. 4 at KeyArena.

Gonzaga, Eastern Washington and Washington State have not released nonconference schedules. But the NCAA did announce WSU will act as a NCAA tournament regional host site in March. Spokane was named to replace Sacramento, which had a scheduling conflict at the Sleep Train Arena prevent the regional from being played there in 2015.

2014-15 Non-Conference Schedule Announced

Release: 08/04/2014

SEATTLE – The Washington women’s basketball season is less than three months away. Monday, head coach Mike Neighbors released the non-conference schedule via his Instagram and twitter accounts. The Dawgs will face a challenging non-conference schedule that includes four NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.

For a more in-depth look be sure to give Coach Neighbors a follow on twitter at @coachneighbors and on Instagram at nabes22.

The Dawgs open the season with a difficult road test straight away. Washington will travel to Oklahoma to face the Sooners on November 14. Oklahoma is a perennial NCAA Tournament team and will show the Huskies immediately if their hard work in the offseason paid off.

The Huskies home opener will be November 20 as South Dakota comes to Alaska Airlines Arena. The Coyotes were the Summit League Champions last season and will bring NCAA Tournament experience to the floor.

On November 23, the Dawgs host Yale in what will be a return to Seattle for head coach Chris Gobrecht. Gobrecht is the winningest coach in Washington history and played a huge role in building the Washington program and the great women’s basketball fans in Seattle.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Dawgs will head to Mexico to take part in the Cancun Challenge that includes three games in three days. Washington will open with Florida State, another NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. The following two days, the Dawgs face Furman and Hartford in what will be a tough stretch against three good opponents in a 72-hour span.

The December schedule begins with two road games against local rivals. First, the Dawgs will face Seattle U. at KeyArena on December 4. It will be the first of what Washington hopes is several games at KeyArena this season as the Pac-12 Tournament returns to that location for the third-straight season. On December 7, Washington heads down I-5 to take on Portland in the annual matchup.

The second to last home game on the non-conference season will come on December 14 when Grambling State comes to town. The Tigers will make the cross-country trip from Grambling, Louisiana, for the first-ever matchup with the Huskies.

The final road trip of the Huskies non-conference season will be a trip to Southern California to face San Diego State and UC Riverside. The Dawgs face the Aztecs on December 18 in a rematch of the 2012 contest that was one of the best games in recent memory, decided on a last-second Talia Walton jumper for the Huskies. Two days later, the Dawgs head up the road to UC Riverside for another first-ever matchup.

Finally, Washington closes the 2014 non-conference schedule at home when Texas A&M comes to town. The Aggies are considered a national title contender and also pits Coach Neighbors against one of his mentors, Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. The Aggies won the 2011 NCAA Championship and will be a great test for the Dawgs as they head into the Pac-12 season.

The Pac-12 schedule will not be released until early September as TV choices have yet to be made. Once again the Pac-12 Networks will carry the majority of the conference games with some non-conference tilts also sprinkled in. The TV schedule will likely be released at the same time as the conference schedule.
