WBB Selected to Win WCC, Greinacher tabbed All-WCC

10-time WCC champion Gonzaga picked by coaches to win WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women’s basketball team earned seven first-place votes to be named the clear favorite to win the West Coast Conference title, while senior forward Sunny Greinacher was named Preseason All-WCC, conference officials announced Monday.

The Zags, who have won the last 10 regular season WCC titles, received seven of the nine possible first-place votes for 78 points in the poll. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. BYU was picked second and received two first-place votes and 71 points. San Diego’s was selected third with one first-vote and 65 points, just ahead of Pacific’s 60 points.

In the preseason All-Conference selections, Greinacher, a returning starter for new head coach Lisa Fortier, was named to the team for first time. She started 33 of 34 games last year for the Zags, who went 29-5, won the WCC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Greinacher was second on the team with 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Fortier takes over for Kelly Graves after nine seasons on the Gonzaga staff in various capacities. She first came to Gonzaga in 2004, spending two years as the coordinator of basketball operations. She then spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado before returning to GU in 2007.

In her seven years as a Gonzaga assistant, the Bulldogs have produced an overall record of 196-43. The Zags have dominated the West Coast Conference during that span, compiling a 98-8 mark to go with seven consecutive WCC regular-season championships and five WCC Tournament titles.

The Bulldogs host Eastern Oregon in an exhibition on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., then officially open the regular season against Dayton on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. That game will be televised locally on SWX.
