Legendary UW coach Chris Gobrecht to be honored Sunday

HuskiesLogoWashington hosts Yale at 7:30pm on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena. The inaugural matchup between the schools marks the return of legendary UW coach Chris Gobrecht, who now leads Yale.

Gobrecht is UW’s all-time winningest coach at 243-89, leading the Huskies to nine NCAA Tournaments in her 11 years at UW. She won two Pac-10 titles, including the 1989-90 team that went 28-3 and advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.

UW will recognize Gobrecht on-court during the second timeout of the first half. Many of her former players, like all-time leading scorer Jamie Redd, are expected to attend.

Yale (1-1) lost its season opener to St. John’s, 61-50, and defeated Holy Cross, 83-70 on Tuesday. Former Garfield HS standout Nyasha Sarju and Seattle Prep’s Mary Ann Santucci average about 19 minutes for the Bulldogs.

Washington (1-1) defeated South Dakota at home in its last outing. Sophomore G Kelsey Plum scored 37 points against the Coyotes.
