Gonzaga dropped out of AP Top 25 poll; UConn slipped to No. 3

South Carolina F Aleighsa Welch goes for a layup in Sunday’s win against San Diego State

Many thought then-No. 6 Stanford upsetting then-No. 1 UConn last week, snapping the Huskies’ 47-game winning streak, was good for the women’s basketball season. Well, that was just the beginning.

Days after Stanford’s win, then-No. 10 Texas traveled to The Farm and used overtime to win at Maples Pavilion. That upset ended the Cardinal’s 28-game home win streak and suddenly the women’s hoops landscape is a mystery. And that’s a good thing.

No team looked superhuman after the first full week of games, many ranked teams barely winning some matchups. The Associated Press poll reflected as much, South Carolina (3-0) moving to the No. 1 spot for the first time in its program’s history and four teams getting first-place votes overall.

Gonzaga (3-0), which entered the poll tied at No. 24 last week, dropped out while Mississippi State (4-0) entered at No. 25. The Bulldogs won the preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

Washington State (3-1) received one vote (not mine) despite losing to No. 15 Nebraska at home on Wednesday. Stanford (2-1) is now fifth in the poll decided by national media while Cal (4-0) remained at No. 14, defeating Missouri for the Rainbow Wahine Classic title.

Oregon State (3-0) moved up a slot to No. 19 but hasn’t played anyone. OSU’s first game against a ranked opponent isn’t until it plays at No. 11 North Carolina on Dec. 16.

Arizona State (eight) and UCLA (four) were the other Pac-12 teams to receive votes.

Here’s my ballot:
